Swimming and Drowning in the Philippines

By Jeff Harvie December 22, 2025

Drowning is a major cause of death in the Philippines, an island nation where most people cannot swim. Important safety information for visitors.

Here's something that might surprise you: despite being an archipelago of over 7,000 islands, most Filipinos cannot swim. And drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in the Philippines. ## Why can't Filipinos swim? ### Lack of swimming education Swimming is not taught in most Philippine schools. Public pools are rare, and beach areas often don't have lifeguards or swimming instruction available. ### Fear of water Many Filipinos have an almost superstitious fear of water, believing it harbors spirits or danger. This fear is passed down through generations. ### Lack of access Despite being surrounded by water, many Filipinos don't have easy access to safe swimming areas. Rivers and coastal waters can be dangerous with strong currents. ## The dangers ### Rip currents The Philippine coastline has many beaches with dangerous rip currents. Without swimming skills or knowledge of how to escape a rip, these can be deadly. ### Alcohol and swimming Like everywhere else, alcohol and swimming don't mix. But the combination is particularly dangerous when the swimmers can't actually swim. ### Overconfidence Sometimes people who can barely swim think they're better than they are. Wading in shallow water is very different from swimming in deep water. ## What you need to know ### Never assume anyone can swim Your Filipina wife may not be able to swim, even if she grew up near the ocean. Ask before assuming. ### Be the lifeguard If you go to the beach with family, you may be the only one who can rescue someone in trouble. Stay alert. ### Swimming lessons Consider arranging swimming lessons for your wife and any children. It's a life skill that could literally save their lives. ### Respect the water Don't be overconfident yourself. Philippine waters can be treacherous, with strong currents, unpredictable waves, and sometimes marine life to be wary of. ## A word of caution If someone gets into trouble in the water, be careful about rescue attempts. Drowning people can panic and drag their rescuers under. If possible, throw something flotable or extend something for them to grab. Only enter the water as a last resort, and approach from behind if possible.
