The Obsession with Milk, Rice and Vitamins in the Philippines

The milk lobby has been effective in convincing people that milk is essential. Nowhere more than in the Philippines. Filipino parents are convinced that milk and vitamins are essential.

The milk lobby has long been very effective in convincing people that milk is an essential part of good nutrition. Nowhere more than in the Philippines. Filipino parents are utterly convinced that milk (and vitamin pills) are essential for the health of children, along with excessive rice consumption. The end result is still a whole lot of child malnutrition among Filipino children. ## Milk products for children in the Philippines Walk into any supermarket in the Philippines and you'll see row after row of expensive milk powder products aimed at children. Brands like Bear Brand, Nido, Promil, etc. Filipino parents spend huge amounts of money on these products, convinced that their children will be healthier and smarter as a result. And yet malnutrition rates among Filipino children remain high. Why? Because these expensive milk products are often taking the place of real, nutritious food in the family budget. ## The rice obsession Rice is the staple food in the Philippines. Nothing wrong with that in itself. But the problem is QUANTITY. Filipino children are often fed mountains of white rice with tiny scraps of meat and virtually no vegetables. White rice is basically empty calories. It fills the stomach but provides little nutrition. And when children fill up on rice, they don't eat the vegetables and protein they need to grow properly. ## Vitamins are not magic pills Filipino parents love buying vitamins for their children. They believe these pills will make their children healthy and smart. But vitamins are supplements, not replacements for real food. A child who eats a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits, and protein doesn't need vitamin supplements. A child who eats mountains of rice and takes vitamin pills is still malnourished. ## What actually works What actually works for child nutrition: 1. Reduce the rice portion significantly 2. Increase vegetables - lots of them, different colors 3. Ensure adequate protein - meat, fish, eggs, legumes 4. Fresh fruits 5. Limit sugary drinks and junk food The money spent on expensive milk powder and vitamins would be better spent on real, nutritious food. A balanced diet is the key to healthy children, not magic products.
